What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive skin resurfacing treatment that uses a sterile surgical scalpel held at a precise angle to gently exfoliate the surface of the skin. In one treatment, it removes the build-up of dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair (commonly called “peach fuzz”) that sits on the face — revealing the fresh, smooth skin underneath.

Don’t let the word “scalpel” alarm you — in the right hands, this is a completely pain-free treatment that feels more like a gentle stroking sensation than anything else. The technique requires proper training and knowledge of facial anatomy, which is why it’s important to have it done by a qualified professional.

“Dermaplaning is one of those treatments where clients genuinely can’t believe the difference until they feel their skin afterwards. The smoothness is immediate — and the glow that follows over the next few days is something else entirely.”

It’s also one of the few treatments that instantly improves makeup application — foundation sits differently on skin that has been properly exfoliated, and skincare products absorb more effectively too.

Who is this treatment suited to?

Dermaplaning is one of the most universally suitable treatments available — one of its greatest strengths is how few contraindications it has. It works particularly well for those who want immediate results without any downtime or recovery.

✓  Well suited to
  • Dull, lacklustre skin that needs a pick-me-up
  • Anyone bothered by visible facial hair (peach fuzz)
  • Dry or dehydrated skin with a rough texture
  • Those who want to improve makeup application
  • Sensitive skin types who can’t tolerate chemical exfoliation
  • Pregnant clients (one of the few aesthetic treatments suitable in pregnancy)
  • Anyone wanting a treatment before a special occasion
⚠  Not suitable if
  • !You have active acne, pustules, or inflamed skin
  • !You have a cold sore or active skin infection
  • !You have rosacea with prominent broken capillaries (discuss with me first)
  • !You have used isotretinoin within the last 6 months
  • !You have sunburned skin

One common myth: dermaplaning does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. Vellus (fine) facial hair is biologically different from terminal hair — cutting it does not change its structure or colour. This is a widely misunderstood aspect of the treatment.

What to expect on the day

Before
Preparation

Arrive with a clean face if possible. Avoid exfoliants and retinol for 3 days before your treatment. There’s no significant preparation required — dermaplaning is one of the most straightforward treatments to prepare for.

During
The Treatment (30–45 minutes)

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried. Using a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle, I work methodically across the face using short, feather-light strokes. The sensation is gentle — most clients find it relaxing. The treatment covers the full face except for the immediate eye area and nostrils.

After
Immediately Post-Treatment

Your skin will feel incredibly smooth — this is always the moment clients reach for their face. There may be mild pinkness which settles within an hour. I’ll apply a soothing serum and SPF to finish. Results are instant and continue to improve over the following days.

Safety & side effects

Dermaplaning is one of the safest aesthetic treatments available, with an excellent safety record across all skin types. In qualified hands, the risk of adverse events is exceptionally low. The key is proper training, a thorough skin assessment beforehand, and sterile technique throughout.

At Amber Grove, a full skin assessment is carried out before every treatment, and a new sterile blade is always used — never reused between clients or appointments.

Common side effects are mild and very temporary:

Mild pinkness or redness (1–2 hours)
Slight sensitivity to touch immediately after
Very occasionally, minor superficial irritation
Temporary increase in sun sensitivity

Frequently asked questions

Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker?
+
No — this is one of the most persistent myths about dermaplaning, and it simply isn’t true. Vellus facial hair (peach fuzz) is biologically different from the terminal hair on your head or eyebrows. Cutting it at the surface does not affect the follicle, change the hair’s texture, or alter its growth cycle. Hair may feel slightly stubby for a few days as the fine tips regrow, but it will return to its previous soft, fine state. This has been confirmed in multiple dermatological studies.
How often should I have dermaplaning?
+
Every 3–4 weeks is ideal for most clients — this aligns with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle. Regular treatments produce cumulative benefits, with ongoing improvements in texture, tone, and radiance. Some clients have dermaplaning monthly as a skin maintenance treatment alongside other therapies, while others have it a few times a year. We’ll find a frequency that suits your skin and your lifestyle.
Can I have dermaplaning if I’m pregnant?
+
Yes — dermaplaning is one of the very few aesthetic treatments that is considered safe during pregnancy. There are no chemicals or active ingredients involved that would be of concern. Many clients find it particularly useful during pregnancy when many other treatments and skincare ingredients are off the table. Do let me know you’re pregnant when booking so I can ensure your appointment is perfectly tailored to you.
Can dermaplaning be combined with other treatments?
+
Dermaplaning works brilliantly as a preparatory treatment before other therapies — particularly chemical peels (where the exfoliated surface allows for deeper, more even peel penetration) and LED phototherapy. It can also be combined with a signature facial experience. It should not be performed on the same day as microneedling or after a fresh chemical peel. I’ll help you plan the right treatment sequence for your goals.
Does dermaplaning help with acne scars?
+
Dermaplaning can improve the appearance of very superficial post-acne marks and uneven pigmentation by removing the outermost layer of skin and stimulating cellular renewal. However, for more significant acne scarring, microneedling or a course of chemical peels will produce more impactful results. In many cases, dermaplaning works well as a complementary treatment alongside these — and regular treatments do contribute to progressive improvement over time.
