What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is one of the most versatile and effective skin resurfacing treatments available. A carefully selected chemical solution is applied to the skin, which works to loosen and remove the outermost layers of dead and damaged skin cells. What’s revealed underneath is fresher, smoother, and more even skin — with a whole cascade of repair and renewal triggered beneath the surface too.

The word “chemical” can sound alarming, but it simply refers to the active acids used — all of which have a long history of safe, clinical use. Medical-grade peels are significantly more effective than high-street equivalents because they use higher concentrations and properly penetrate the skin rather than just sitting on the surface.

“I love chemical peels because they’re genuinely transformative for such a wide range of concerns — and the results speak for themselves. The key is choosing the right peel for the right skin, which is why a proper consultation always comes first.”

At Amber Grove, peels are always preceded by a thorough skin assessment. I’ll select the formulation, concentration, and application technique that suits your specific concern and skin type — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Types of chemical peel

Chemical peels are categorised by their depth of action. Lighter peels are ideal for regular maintenance and sensitive skin; deeper peels deliver more dramatic results but require more recovery time. I’ll always recommend the most appropriate option for you at consultation.

Superficial Peels
No downtime

Work on the outermost layer of skin only. Excellent for brightening dull skin, mild pigmentation, and general skin maintenance. Often called “lunchtime peels” as you can return to normal activity immediately. Suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. Include AHA peels (glycolic, lactic) and low-strength BHA (salicylic acid).

Medium-Depth Peels
3–5 days peeling

Penetrate into the mid-layer of skin (dermis). More effective for moderate pigmentation, acne scarring, fine lines, and uneven texture. Some peeling and redness expected over 3–5 days. More significant results than superficial peels. Include TCA (trichloroacetic acid) at various concentrations.

Specialised Formulations
Condition-specific

Targeted formulations designed for specific concerns — including the Jessner’s peel for acne and oily skin, mandelic acid peels for sensitive or darker skin tones, and combination peels that address multiple concerns simultaneously. Recommended based on your individual assessment.

Key benefits

Skin Texture
Removes dead skin cell buildup, smoothing rough, uneven texture and refining enlarged pores for a visibly more polished surface.
☀️
Pigmentation & Sun Damage
One of the most effective treatments for hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven skin tone — especially with a course of treatments.
🌿
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Stimulates collagen production and cellular renewal, progressively improving the appearance of superficial lines and crepe-like skin.
🫧
Acne & Oily Skin
BHA and salicylic acid peels penetrate pores to dissolve sebum, reduce breakouts, and calm the inflammation associated with acne.
🔄
Acne Scarring
Medium-depth peels can significantly improve post-acne marks and shallow scarring by resurfacing the affected layers of skin.
💧
Radiance & Glow
Even a single superficial peel produces an immediate brightening effect — skin looks more awake, luminous, and refreshed.

What to expect on the day

Before
Preparation

Avoid exfoliants (retinol, AHAs, BHAs) for 5–7 days before your peel. Come with a clean face. I may recommend a pre-treatment skincare protocol for certain peels — particularly for those targeting pigmentation — to prepare the skin in the weeks before.

During
The Peel Treatment

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared. The peel solution is applied evenly and left on for a specific amount of time — I monitor your skin’s response throughout. You’ll feel a tingling or warming sensation; more active peels produce a temporary stinging feeling. Afterwards, the peel is neutralised and a soothing, protective serum applied.

Immediately after
What Your Skin Will Look Like

Your skin will be pink and slightly sensitive — similar to a mild sunburn. Superficial peels settle quickly; medium peels may show more visible redness for 24–48 hours before the peeling process begins. I’ll apply a protective layer and send you home with aftercare products and instructions.

Days after
The Peeling Process

Depending on the peel depth, you may experience flaking or peeling skin over the following 3–7 days. This is entirely normal — it is old, damaged skin being shed. The new skin underneath is revealed gradually. It’s important not to peel or pick at the skin during this time.

Aftercare instructions

☀️
SPF is non-negotiableFreshly peeled skin is significantly more sensitive to UV. Apply SPF 30–50 every morning without exception for at least 2 weeks.
🚫
Don’t pick or peelAllow skin to shed naturally. Picking extends healing time and increases the risk of scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
🧴
Keep skincare gentleUse only fragrance-free, gentle products for 7–10 days. No active ingredients (retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C) until skin is fully healed.
💧
Hydration is keyUse a gentle, hydrating moisturiser frequently to support the healing process and reduce tightness and discomfort.
🌡️
Avoid heatNo saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise for 48–72 hours. Heat increases redness and can interfere with healing.
💄
Hold off on makeupWhere possible, avoid makeup for at least 24 hours after your peel. Mineral-based makeup is the most gentle option if needed.

Safety & side effects

Medical-grade chemical peels have a well-established safety record when performed by a qualified practitioner with a thorough understanding of skin types and peel chemistry. At Amber Grove, every peel is preceded by a consultation and skin assessment — I will never apply a peel without properly evaluating your skin first.

A thorough knowledge of how different skin types, tones, and conditions respond to different peel formulations is essential for safe outcomes — and this is exactly the clinical expertise I bring.

Common side effects vary by peel depth but typically include:

Redness and warmth immediately after treatment
Flaking or peeling (3–7 days depending on depth)
Temporary tightness or dryness of skin
Mild swelling, particularly around the eyes
Temporary increased sensitivity to the sun
Temporary darkening before pigmentation fades (normal)

Frequently asked questions

How many treatments will I need?
+
This depends on your concern. For general brightening and skin maintenance, a single treatment every 4–6 weeks works well. For more significant concerns like pigmentation or acne scarring, a course of 3–6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart typically produces the best results. I’ll give you a realistic treatment plan at your consultation — and be honest about what’s achievable.
Will I be able to go to work afterwards?
+
After a superficial peel, most clients can return to work or normal activities the same day — you’ll look a little flushed but it settles quickly. After a medium-depth peel, you should expect 3–5 days of visible peeling and redness, so you may want to plan accordingly. I’ll always tell you exactly what to expect from your chosen treatment before we begin so there are no surprises.
Can I have a chemical peel if I have darker skin?
+
Yes, but with important caveats. Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) have a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — where the skin responds to the peel by producing excess melanin, temporarily darkening the treated area. This doesn’t mean peels are off the table; it means the choice of peel formulation, concentration, and preparation protocol is even more critical. Mandelic acid peels and carefully chosen lactic acid formulations are generally safer for darker skin tones. I’ll assess your skin type carefully and recommend accordingly.
Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?
+
Chemical peels work beautifully as part of a broader treatment plan. They pair well with microneedling (spaced at least 4 weeks apart), LED phototherapy (which can be done immediately after a superficial peel to reduce redness and support healing), and a medical-grade skincare routine. They should not be combined with dermal fillers or anti-wrinkle treatments on the same day. I’m happy to build a combined plan at your consultation.
I have sensitive skin — can I still have a peel?
+
Sensitive skin doesn’t automatically rule out chemical peels — it simply means we choose more carefully. Lactic acid peels are significantly gentler than glycolic acid and are often well tolerated by sensitive skin types. Mandelic acid is another excellent option for reactive skin. The concentration and contact time can also be adjusted. A skin patch test may be appropriate before your first treatment. Come and chat to me about your skin’s history and we’ll find an approach that works for you.
