About mole & skin lesion screening

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, and melanoma — the most serious form — is most effectively treated when caught early. If you’ve noticed a mole that concerns you, or a skin lesion that has changed in appearance, getting it checked promptly is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

At Amber Grove, I offer professional mole and skin lesion screening in partnership with Map My Mole — the first and only UK company offering this kind of community-based service. This gives you direct access to a Consultant Dermatologist’s expert review without the need for a lengthy GP referral or a costly private appointment (which can range from £175 to £300).

⚠️ If you’re worried about a mole or skin lesion, please don’t wait. Early detection makes an enormous difference to outcomes. Book a screening and get the reassurance — or action — you need.

“I set up the mole screening service at Amber Grove because I know from clinical experience that people put off getting things checked — whether because of the NHS wait, the cost of going private, or simply not wanting to bother anyone. This service removes every one of those barriers.”

Warning signs: the ABCDE rule

The ABCDE rule is a widely used guide for identifying moles or lesions that warrant professional assessment. If a mole shows any of these features, please book a screening promptly.

A
Asymmetry
One half of the mole doesn’t match the other — irregular, uneven shape.
B
Border
Edges are ragged, notched, blurred, or irregular rather than smooth and defined.
C
Colour
Uneven colour, or multiple shades — brown, black, pink, red, white, or blue within one lesion.
D
Diameter
Larger than 6mm across (about the size of a pencil eraser) — though melanomas can be smaller.
E
Evolving
Any change in size, shape, colour, or a new symptom such as itching, bleeding, or crusting.

You don’t need to tick every box to seek assessment. If anything about a mole or skin lesion concerns you — even if you can’t put your finger on exactly why — please book a screening. Peace of mind is always worth it.

How the screening works

The service is delivered in partnership with Map My Mole, which provides remote assessment by a Consultant Dermatologist. Here’s exactly what happens:

1

Book Your Appointment

Book your screening at Amber Grove online or by contacting us directly. We’ll confirm your appointment and send you any preparation information needed.

2

Clinical Photography

At your appointment, I conduct a thorough assessment of the mole or lesion and take high-quality clinical photographs using specialist equipment. As the Map My Mole-approved clinician, I capture all the required images and information.

3

Dermatologist Review

Your images and clinical information are reviewed by a Consultant Dermatologist through the Map My Mole platform — in line with the British Association of Dermatologists’ teledermatology guidelines. This is the same level of expertise you would receive in a hospital setting.

4

Your Report

You receive a written report explaining what the lesion is and what it represents. If the dermatologist identifies a lesion of concern, the report can be sent directly to your GP to expedite any NHS referral — significantly shortening the wait compared to a standard GP referral process.

Who should consider screening?

This service is for anyone who is concerned about a mole or skin lesion — regardless of whether that concern is urgent or simply nagging. You don’t need symptoms to benefit from a professional assessment.

It’s particularly valuable for people who:

Have noticed a change in an existing mole — in size, shape, colour, or texture.

Have a new lesion that has appeared and isn’t going away.

Have a personal or family history of skin cancer and want regular monitoring.

Have had significant sun exposure over their lifetime — especially with a history of burning.

Simply want reassurance about something that’s been worrying them, without waiting weeks for a GP appointment.

This service does not replace emergency medical care. If you have a lesion that is bleeding heavily, rapidly growing, or you are acutely concerned, please contact your GP, call 111, or attend A&E directly.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly will I get my results?
+
Reports are typically returned within a few working days of your appointment. The Map My Mole platform facilitates rapid review by the dermatologist — significantly faster than waiting for a traditional GP referral and hospital appointment, which can take weeks or months. I’ll discuss the expected turnaround time with you at your appointment.
What if the dermatologist identifies something concerning?
+
If the dermatologist identifies a lesion that requires further investigation, the report will clearly state this and provide guidance for next steps. The report can be shared directly with your GP, who can then make an urgent referral — meaning you bypass the initial GP appointment step and have the dermatologist’s professional recommendation already in hand, which can significantly speed up the NHS pathway. I’ll support you through this process and answer any questions you have.
Can I get multiple moles checked in one appointment?
+
Yes — please let me know when booking how many lesions you’d like assessed so I can allocate enough time for your appointment. Each lesion is photographed and documented separately and included in the dermatologist’s review. If you have a number of lesions you’d like monitored over time, we can discuss a regular screening schedule.
Is this service suitable for children?
+
Please contact me directly to discuss screening for children. While mole changes in children are less commonly of concern than in adults, any significant change warrants professional assessment. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the appointment.
Do I need a GP referral to use this service?
+
No — this is one of the service’s key benefits. You can book directly with Amber Grove without needing to see your GP first. The Map My Mole pathway gives you direct access to Consultant Dermatologist-level review from your local community clinic, cutting out the traditional referral journey. If further NHS input is needed following your assessment, the report facilitates a faster pathway through your GP than starting from scratch.
