What is medical microneedling?

Medical microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is a skin resurfacing treatment that uses an electronic device fitted with ultra-fine, sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin’s surface. These tiny, controlled micro-injuries trigger your skin’s natural wound-healing response, prompting a significant increase in the production of collagen and elastin.

The result? Firmer, smoother, more refined skin — with improvements that build progressively over weeks and months as the new collagen matures. Because the technique stimulates the skin from within rather than removing its surface, the results are genuinely regenerative rather than just superficially cosmetic.

“Microneedling is one of the treatments I’m most passionate about because the science is solid and the results are real. Clients are often surprised by how much their skin changes not just in appearance, but in how it feels — firmer, plumper, and healthier.”

At Amber Grove, medical-grade microneedling is always combined with specialist skin boosters and serums applied during treatment, which are driven deeper into the skin through the microchannels — significantly enhancing the overall result.

What to expect on the day

Before
Preparation

Avoid retinol, AHAs and BHAs for 5 days before treatment. Come with clean skin, no makeup. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least a week beforehand.

20–30 minutes
Numbing

A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and left to work for 20–30 minutes. This makes the treatment very comfortable for the vast majority of clients.

30–40 minutes
The Treatment

The numbing cream is removed, a hydrating serum is applied, and I work methodically across the skin with the microneedling device. The depth setting is adjusted for different areas of the face. You’ll feel a mild vibrating sensation and some pressure — most clients describe it as manageable. A face massage and SPF finish the treatment.

After
Immediate Post-Treatment Skin

Your skin will look like a mild sunburn — red and slightly sensitive. This is completely normal and begins to settle within 12–24 hours. Avoid makeup, saunas, sunbeds, and steam rooms for 48 hours. Some clients experience mild flaking over days 3–5 as skin renews.

When will I see results?

Microneedling results are progressive — the real transformation happens over weeks as new collagen matures. Most clients notice their skin beginning to look different within 2–3 weeks, with continued improvement for up to 3 months after each treatment.

Days 1–3
Redness and mild sensitivity. Skin may feel tight. This is your body’s healing response working.
Days 4–7
Redness settling. Possible mild flaking. Skin starting to feel smoother.
Week 2–4
Initial glow and improved texture becomes visible. Pores appearing more refined.
Month 2–3
Full collagen remodelling. Significant improvement in texture, firmness and any scarring present.

A course of 3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended for most concerns. Acne scarring typically benefits from 4–6 sessions. Results can then be maintained with treatments every 4–6 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does microneedling hurt?
+
With numbing cream applied beforehand, most clients find microneedling very manageable. The sensation is typically described as a mild vibrating or scratching feeling with some pressure — more of a heightened sensation than pain. Some areas of the face (such as the forehead and around the mouth) can be slightly more sensitive than others. I always take time to ensure you’re comfortable before we begin, and the numbing cream is left on for long enough to be fully effective. Please don’t hesitate to ask for a pause at any point.
How long does the redness last?
+
The initial redness — which resembles a sunburn — typically settles significantly within 12–24 hours, and most clients find it has largely resolved by day two. Some degree of mild pinkness can persist for up to 72 hours in those with more sensitive or reactive skin. I’ll always be honest with you about what to expect for your skin type before we proceed, so you can plan accordingly — particularly if you have a special event coming up.
What makes medical microneedling different from home derma-rollers?
+
The difference is significant. Home derma-rollers use rolling needles that drag and tear the skin as they move — which causes irregular micro-injuries and can increase the risk of scarring and infection. Medical microneedling uses an electronic pen device with reciprocating (up-and-down) needle motion, creating precise, consistent vertical channels at a controlled depth. The needles are single-use sterile, the depth can be adjusted by area, and the procedure is performed in a clinical setting with appropriate aftercare. The results from professional treatment are incomparably better — and significantly safer.
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?
+
Yes — and very effectively. At Amber Grove, microneedling is often combined with specialist skin boosters (polynucleotides, Neofound or Purasomes) applied during treatment to be driven into the skin through the microchannels. LED phototherapy immediately after microneedling is also highly beneficial — it reduces redness and supports the healing and collagen-stimulating response. Chemical peels and other treatments should be spaced at least 4 weeks apart. I’ll build you a treatment plan that maximises your investment.
Is microneedling effective for acne scars specifically?
+
Microneedling is one of the most evidence-based treatments for acne scarring, and one I recommend frequently for this concern. It works by breaking down the fibrous scar tissue beneath the surface and stimulating new, healthy collagen to replace it. The degree of improvement depends on the type and depth of scarring — rolling and boxcar scars respond particularly well; ice-pick scars (very deep and narrow) may benefit from additional treatments like TCA cross alongside microneedling. For most clients with post-acne marks, a course of 3–6 sessions produces genuinely significant improvement. I’ll give you an honest assessment at consultation.
